When you think of Bruce Lee you think of Martial Arts and when you think of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee’s system of scientific street fighting you think of the Jeet Kune Do Federation. The Jeet Kune Do Federation is the oldest international group focused upon educating the public worldwide on the system of Jeet Kune Do. The association was founded in 1992 by its current president and a descendant of the Bruce Lee School in California, Carter Hargrave. Next February the Jeet Kune Do Federation will have been serving students in over 44 countries for nineteen years making it the longest standing body of students and supporters for Bruce Lee’s art.
Jeet Kune Do is Chinese and translates from Mandarin to English meaning Way of the Intercepting Fist coined from one of the arts “center stealing” techniques.
The Jeet Kune Do Federation is the current keeper of the educational doctrine consisting of the original teachings of Bruce Lee as he taught at one of his famous three schools, Seattle Washington, Oakland California, and San Francisco. There have been various attempts to bring together teachers and students in the past with the Lee estate’s Jeet Kune Do Society and Nucleus, but both failed and suffered membership difficulties only reaching less than fifty members each respectively before disbanding not long after they began due to ego and infighting.
The Jeet Kune Do Federation stands as an example of how to bring together students and supporters in a non political directive, with only the preservation and propagation of Jeet Kune Do its only goal, with over eight thousand members worldwide. There have been small clubs and internet groups with less than 20 members as well as individuals who have tried to profiteer off of the Jeet Kune Do Federation’s success by using its name or variants to confuse potential students into thinking they are getting the “real Jeet Kune Do” says Federation President Carter Hargrave. “We go to great lengths to protect our name and our materials because in the end all we have in this world is our good name and reputation, and as the leader for Jeet Kune Do we owe it to our students and membership.”
