Is Karate A Viable Form of Self Defense?
Many people choose Karate as their choice for self defense, both for themselves and for their children. Many soon come to realize that even though they have become black belts, they still get their butts kicked by non-trained fighters. Why exactly is this?
Many people go on about how awesome Chuck Norris is. “Chuck Norris Facts” such as “there is no theory of evolution, just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live” were an Internet phenomenon for a while. If Chuck Norris’ tears really could cure cancer if he could cry, then the whole world missed the opportunity to cure cancer in one of his earliest movies.
In Return of the Dragon, Chuck Norris, one of the world’s greatest Karate fighters at that time, was cast as Bruce Lee’s nemesis. The final showdown between Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee was short lived—more so than the two taking their shirts off preparing for the fight. Granted, the script called for Bruce Lee to win, but it still illustrated just how effective Karate is against other fighting styles.
Karate was developed on the island of Okinawa by the peasants to defend themselves against invasions from Japan. Obviously, Okinawa is now part of Japan, and that as well is telling. Karate didn’t hold up against Jiu Jitsu. Before Karate came to the United States, elements of Jiu Jitsu were incorporated into it to make it at least a passable fighting style.
Even more recently, the inferiority of Karate was exposed in a show called “The Human Weapon.” The hosts traveled to the island of Okinawa to learn Karate, and then spar with an acknowledged master of the form. After only a few days of training, the chosen host fighter fought the master TO A STANDSTILL.
Now, it could be argued that Bill Duff was so much larger than theKarate master. The problem with that argument is that in terms of self defense, size shouldn’t matter. The fact that a master who had spent so many years in training couldn’t take down a newbie in seconds pretty much says it all.
