I want to be as quick as Jet Li, as flexible and accident resistant as Jackie Chan, and as humble as myself. Now, I’ve seen all the advertising, I know all I have to do is work through a bone breaking sweat for a few years, and I will achieve my peak potential. Either that or join the marines.

Well, maybe I have gone a bit overboard, but there is good news in the mix here. The good news is that your body, even as it is, is capable of incredible speed and power and athleticism. The trick is not changing it, but letting it unchange into what it was meant to be.

First, you need to change your eating habits. Nothing too crazy here, just cancel ALL fast foods, and start eating lots of veggies. When your sugar tooth starts acting up, go get a watermelon or a smoothie or something like that. I don’t recommend giving up meat, just eating more moderate portions, and concentrate more on turkey and fish and such instead of those big, juicy steaks.

Now it is time for the work. A basic get in shape program starts with simple exercises, like walking, swimming, jumping jacks, a little rope jumping, and so on, and then progresses into deep squats, deep wormy push ups, and that sort of thing. Actually, I have experienced yoga as a very viable and gentle (at least in the beginning) way of making the body shape up.

Now, the best calisthenic you can do, in this writer’s humble opinion, is the martial arts. The martial arts offer a complete variety of body motion, leaping, twisting, ducking, jumping, skipping, stepping, and so on. Furthermore, they bring you to an understanding of energy, as well as muscle, and this elevates the game to whole new levels.

The message that I am passing on here is that it takes very little work to make your body function, it just takes common sense and a modicum of gentle discipline. As you follow the advices I have given you here, you will realize that you don’t need bulging muscles to get the job done, you just need to streamline your body and make it work the right way. This concept–using the body the right way–is what it is all about.

The physical education classes in school do not tell you how to use your body, they just get you to throw the ball to your friends, they acclimate you socially. When you start to Matrix your body, which is usually through the principle of learning how the muscles are arranged, what direction they are supposed to function in, and, most important, how to make them work together, that is when true efficiency begins, That is when you are going to realize that your body is just a tool, and you can make that tool work any way you see fit.

The key, of course, whether you are studying Hapkido, Jujitsu, or any other art, is to apply Matrixing to it. Matrixing is nothing more than the process of studying and analyzing motion …physics. And, when you take apart the martial arts moves of people like Bruce Lee or Tonny Jaa, you are going to find that they are absolute students of physics, which is nothing more than rudimentary Matrixing.

Can a man beat a woman at Martial Arts? This is a question people have so here is a take on it. Bobby Riggs (1970’s) tennis star boasted he could beat anybody at the game. History tells us Billy Jean King beat him– several times. The press had a field day and women the world over felt good. Lucky for Mixed Martial Arts- mixed does not mean mixed sexes. Jodi Short lost her front teeth during amateur sparring bout in Missouri. Bernice Downs of Illinois would compete as hard with the guys as with women. Malia Dacascos could out kick anyone.

How the Karate Kids see it… We see boys cheer their favorite in a girl -verse- girl match. The same boys are disappointed when a girl beats a boy sparring. Boys forget and we should remind them, it s usually the moms that gets the them to class ( enter Soccer Moms)So sexism starts at a early age, we need to watch for it . Full Contact-

One lady locally signed up for a Mixed Martial Art tournament and died from head wounds. So the money she was to earn for her fee was not worth it to the family. Life is short as it is. Head gear should be required for all contact sports. World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has it’s Divas. Strong, sexy, staged showmanship. At least there they get paid for their bruises. . We hope we don’t see any Mixed-Martial Arts Promotions( Man vs Women) soon. Let women preserve their bodies .Entering and leaving motherhood is enough. Even smashed on beer no one wants to see their wives, daughters and mothers pummeled. Women boxers work as hard as anybody. They are just amusement to the Main Event ( the big boys).

Shown above is Schimabuku’s Isshinryu emblem . We’ve never seen a female displayed more prominent on a uniform. A warrior not concubine . The idea is under the right circumstances, as to protect her offspring the female is most formidable. Theres your answer. Now how can women protect themselves wearing stilleto shoes?! Well, more at pro-amkarateunion.com

A digital camera captures images in a digital format, unlike a conventional camera, which captures images using a photographic film.

History:

Using a mosaic photosensor, Eugene F. Lally of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory first showed how still photos could be produced in a digital domain. An engineer at Eastman Kodak, Steve Sasson, used solid-state CCD chips to build a prototype digital camera having a resolution of 0.01 megapixel, and recorded black and white digital images to a magnetic cassette tape. With this prototype model, Steve took the first image in December of 1975 taking 23 seconds to capture it.

In 1988, Fuji DS-1P became the first digital camera that captured images as a computerized file. However, the camera never entered the U.S. market. In 1991, Kodak DCS-100 was the first commercially available digital camera, which used a 1.3 megapixel sensor. With the advancement of technology, modern digital cameras have become multifunctional and are now capable of capturing audio/video and still photographs.

Benefits:

1 – You get superior image quality. Digital cameras can offer good to excellent image resolution.

2 – You get a fair price. A digital camera is reasonably priced and is affordable.

3 – You can transfer the pictures to your laptop. You can easily connect the digital camera to your laptop and transfer the pictures in your hard disk.

4 – You can print in large sizes. Due to its high resolution, pictures can be printed in large sizes by any plotter.

5 – You can email the pictures to your friends. You can send the pictures by email to your loved ones.

6 – You can store the images in CDs or hard disk. Once the pictures are transferred from digital camera to the computer, permanent storage on a CD or hard disk is possible.

7 – You can take the camera in your pocket while you travel. The small size of the digital camera makes traveling with it easy and a pleasure.

8 – You can move in close to your subject. Zoom lenses offer close-ups of your subject with sharp focus. You can take very good close-ups of flowers, bugs, stamps, coins, etc.

9 – You can rework the image in a computer. Any photo editing software can rework the images taken.

10 – You can take good pictures even in low-light situations. Due to flexible over sensitivity or ISO equivalents, digital cameras can easily take detailed pictures even in low-light conditions.

11 – You can take quality still photos of moving objects. Sports and fashion photography can be easily accomplished due to the fast burst rate of digital cameras.

12 – You save money. There is no need of buying photographic films, developing them into negatives and positives. Moreover, the batteries are usually rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which last a long time.

13 – You can choose as per your needs and fancy. Many models are available like standard digital camera, underwater digital camera, waterproof digital camera, compact digital camera, and the professional digital camera.

Storage Media:

Digital cameras use memory to capture and store images. Some of the storages media used are onboard flash memory, 3.5″ floppy disks, video floppy disk, PCMCIA hard drives, CD or DVD, CompactFlash memory cards, Microdrives, Memory Stick, SD/MMC, MiniSD Card, MicroSD Card, XD-Picture Card, SmartMedia, and FP Memory.

Power:

Digital cameras consume a lot of power, which is supplied by powerful, small in size batteries. Batteries are broadly divided into two groups, namely, off-the-shelf and proprietary. Off-the-shelf batteries are like AA, CR2, CR-V3, AAA, and RCR-V3. They are lithium-ion (Li-Ion) or Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Standard AA non-rechargeable alkaline batteries either do not work or work for only a very short time in most cameras.

Proprietary batteries are built as per the manufacturer`s custom specifications and are usually available as aftermarket replacement parts. Generally, lithium ion batteries are widely used as proprietary batteries for digital cameras.

Koh Samui is the Thailand’s third largest islands, situated in the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 40 kilometers north-east of Surat Thani town. This fantastic tropical island is also sometimes referred to as the Coconut Island, because of countless number of coconuts that it produces per month. Koh Samui is actually an Amphoe (district) of Surat Thani province. The amphoe of Koh Samui is further sub divided into Ang Thong, Li Pa Noi, Taling Ngam, Na Mueang, Ma Ret, Bo Phut, and Maenam. Each of them has their uniqueness and significance, and presents a diverse range of attractions.

The prime draw of Koh Samui is unquestionably its long stretch of tall coconut lined white sandy beaches.
Insights for Individuals and aspiring inventors:

- All of us have the potential to be more creative; we just need to learn the secrets of group genius.

- One does not succeed by luck or being blessed with a rare good idea.

- Success comes through many small sparks and by drawing on collaboration over time.

- Collaboration exposes one to new and unexpected ideas, making it more likely the mind will engage in the richest types of conceptual creativity — combining distant concepts, elaborating concepts by modifying their core features, and creating new concepts.

Role of Conversation:

- Conversation is the driver of group genius.

- Conversation generates innovation if the “Yes, and” approach is used – we accept the other person’s suggestion and build on it further.

Insights for Organizations:

- The failure of many organizations to encourage collaboration explains why improvisers who seek group flow (a particular state of heightened consciousness) often avoid large companies, and instead join small start-ups or work for themselves.

- Organizations which encourage improvisational teams innovate more effectively. Most innovative teams spend less time planning and more time acting — instead of planning, they improvise.

- The leader of a collaborative team has to establish a relaxed environment within which group genius is more likely to happen. This is in contrast to the traditional view of the team manager who breaks down a given task, keeps everyone on schedule, and coordinates the team members, thereby stifling Group Genius.

Collaborative Webs:

- To be successful and realize our full creative potential, we must move beyond the linear creativity mindset and tap into the power of collaborative webs.

- We must shift away from an ownership mentality to a collaborative approach in which managers allow innovation to emerge from a web that includes their company, their customers, their suppliers, other key business partners and even their competitors.</li></ul>I recently had an opportunity to ask Dr. Sawyer about some of the interesting ideas and observations he included in his book.

Vern Burkhardt (VB): Your book is devoted to describing Group Genius. If you were describing this concept to someone who had not read your book, what would you say?

<img src=”http://www.ideaconnection.com/articles/images/keith-sawyer.jpg” align=left alt=”Keith Sawyer” border=0 style=”margin:0 15px 3px 0″>Dr. Sawyer:
We often think that creativity is reserved for special people, the “creatives” or geniuses who somehow have better ideas than the rest of us. But this belief in the lone genius is a myth—especially today, when successful innovation is always based in collaboration and in social networks. All of us can tap into the power of collaboration to enhance our own creativity, and my book shows us how.

VB: In your book you state that there is a link between group flow and creativity, especially at work. And yet in many work environments there are inherent impediments to creativity such as tight deadlines, long hours, and too much time spent in the planning stage rather than moving to executing. Why do you think that so many organizations have not realized that creativity is a key to their survival and therefore made some fundamental and necessary changes to encourage innovation?

Dr. Sawyer:
Group flow is a state of peak performance that groups reach, when the members blend together just right, and the environment allows a certain kind of focus and concentration on the work. Having a strong vision and shared goals makes group flow more likely. Groups that are in flow often work longer hours, but it’s because they are having such a great time, not because they’re being forced to work hard to meet a tight deadline.

To become more innovative, companies have to implement some very difficult organizational changes. One of the most difficult is to realize that innovation can’t be managed in the traditional top-down manner; there’s always an important element of improvisation, unexpected developments, failures and dead ends, so that the best ideas emerge from the bottom up. And managers are trained to stay in control and to always know what is going on.

VB: You give numerous examples to support the myth of the lone genius of historical inventors, and that the truth is always a story of group genius. What do you think are the lessons for people who want to make their living by generating new ideas and inventions?

Dr. Sawyer:
If your goal is to be a traditional solitary inventor, who comes up with patentable new ideas and then licenses them to companies that will make them, I think that model is fading away. The last time that model dominated innovation was the early 19th century. The big shift away from the “lone inventor” model was Thomas Edison, who innovated by creating the first modern research lab, hiring lots of experts, and combining them in effective teams. (The people who worked in Edison’s lab, those who came up with most of the ideas that we now credit to Edison, were quoted as saying “Edison wasn’t really that good of an inventor.”) Most innovations today originate in collaborative teams.

I always say that the best way to have good ideas is to collaborate constantly. You have to talk to people every day, and make sure they come from a broad range of backgrounds. The best way to be more creative is to join together with others, in the kinds of teams that I described in my book.

VB: In describing the seven characteristics of creative teams you state that successful collaborative teams practice “deep listening”. What do you mean by that and how can one learn to do deep listening?

Dr. Sawyer:
Deep listening is a concept that I first heard about from improv theater actors. What most of us do in conversation is that we listen only half way, because we’re already thinking about what we want to say next. But if you do that in an improv theater performance, nothing new and original will ever emerge. New ideas emerge from conversation when each person’s response is a direct elaboration of what just came before; and, you can’t really know what will be the best thing to say until you fully heard what was just spoken.

VB: You state that collaborative conversation accelerates the innovation process because the sparks happen in real time. Since this is the driver of group genius what are some practical steps an organization can take to encourage this type of conversation?

Dr. Sawyer:
Many companies are doing this right now. One key piece of advice is to create environments that foster spontaneous, unplanned encounters. Office furniture companies like Steelcase and Herman Miller are way out in front on this, and they’ve custom-designed new floor layouts that are designed to foster these creative conversations: by, for example, designing an office floor using a hub-and-spoke layout, where the hubs are spaces for meeting and getting coffee and the spokes are the walkways. The intent of this layout is that anytime you need to walk somewhere, you have to pass through one or more hubs, increasing the chance that you’ll bump into someone. Google has a famously large sweeping staircase, and has installed wall outlets all the way up the staircase just to encourage people to sit on the steps with their laptops, so that they’ll have more encounters with the other folks who are going up and down the stairs.

VB: Perhaps related to the previous question, could you explain what you meant when you stated in your book that creative people have their most significant insights while in a flow state and that the most common place people experience flow is in conversation with others?

Dr. Sawyer:
That’s from research by Professor Mike Csikszentmihalyi, the psychologist who coined the term “flow” to refer to a state of peak experience, when you’re fully focused on the task and you lose track of time. The most creative people love their work, and they do it because it helps them attain this flow state. Csikszentmihalyi has done a lot of experimental and observation study of the flow state; and when he interviewed people about flow at work, they ranked “conversation with others” as the most common situation where flow occurred.

VB: You say in <i>Group Genius</i> that it’s a law of innovation that successes cannot go up unless failures go up, and therefore there is a need to create an organizational culture that cherishes failure. How can we best go about “cherishing failure”?

Dr. Sawyer:
This is a tough issue! No one likes failure. But the law I refer to says that successful ideas are correlated with the sheer number of ideas, and that no more than one in ten ideas result in a successful product or service. Some companies actually have a “museum of failure”—like Alessi, the Italian design company, and IDEO, the Silicon Valley design firm.

VB: How would you recommend a Chief Executive Officer, or perhaps better still a group of motivated employees, promote the right culture and values to make an organization collaborative?

Dr. Sawyer:
I wrote my book to answer this question, so I’m not sure I can give a short version! There’s a lot that has to be done, and it has to start at the top of the organization—only the CEO can foster a culture of openness, communication, expectation for innovative effort, and acceptance of failure.

VB: You make a strong case for the death of “brainstorming” as a way to encourage creativity in groups, and yet it seems to persist in many organizations today. Why do such myths persist in organizations?

Dr. Sawyer:

In my book, I talk about “the illusion of group effectiveness”—brainstorming groups always think they’ve been creative. The myth persists because most managers don’t know the research about effectiveness in groups. I’ve been teaching a full-day seminar at our school of business, “Leading Innovative Teams,” to help managers understand how to get their teams to collaborate effectively.

VB: You observe that innovative companies reach out to their customers, and they also reach out to other businesses — even their competitors — to build collaborative relationships that lead to innovation. Despite the numerous examples of companies that have successfully followed this model, does this seem to be a paradox?

Dr. Sawyer:
Only certain kinds of collaborative partnerships work, and they have to be very carefully structured. Our overall economy benefits from this kind of network, even when specific individual companies fail, as long as the ideas and the expertise flow forward to other organizations.

VB: Some large organizations have implemented expensive and complex Customer Relationship Management systems and processes in order to improve customer service and presumably increase profits. In your book you say that the way to collaborate with customers is to foster links up and down the organization; not to channel customers through a sales contact or the customer service desk. Does that argue against the “traditional” CRM model?

Dr. Sawyer:
I think it does, to some extent. Cisco is one company doing something different, as I describe in my book…it’s a very different way of doing business. For Cisco, it might work only because their customers are other businesses…I’m not sure if it would work if your customers are millions of regular consumers. But some companies are finding success by opening up to a small subset of customers, the “lead users” who just love your product and know a lot about it.

VB: You said in your book that you spent two years in the 1990s performing with and collecting video tapes of many jazz and theatre groups, then spent the next 10 years studying these collaborations. You analyzed this data and examined a large number of case studies in the business world. Did you draw any conclusions about the ability of group genius along with its related creativity to solve many of the world’s social, economic and political problems?

Dr. Sawyer:
The complex problems that we face today can only be solved by working together. The pace of innovation has increased, largely because of new technologies that enable greater and more frequent collaborations (telephone, email, inexpensive jet travel, Internet), resulting in a higher standard of living and growth in our economy. I believe that we can channel the power of collaboration to solve pressing social and political issues, as well.

Conclusion:
In his book Dr. Sawyer provides many practical ideas on how to establish and foster a creative group. For example, keep the number in the group to the minimum number required in order to avoid “social loafing”, use a skilled facilitator, put in place group rewards, alternate work with frequent breaks, switch between group and individual activities, and include people with complementary skills who enjoy group interaction.

As the business environment becomes more competitive and unpredictable and with rapid technological change, improvised innovation will become more and more important. The successful organization of the future will run on group genius. Dr. Keith Sawyer concludes his book with “I hope this book contributes, as one small spark, to helping humanity attain its true creative potential”. It does, if we will listen.

Disasters assault you at the most unexpected moments. They arrive without warning, leave the victims comfortless and lives shattered. There is no second chance in the midst of disaster, just total devastation.

Whether it is death, divorce, illness, fires, or acts of terrorism, the agony that is cause has a common aspect. It hurts!! So how do we survive so much pain?

In the initial stages you are overpowered by the anesthetizing state of shock and utter disbelief, where the fullness of the reality is unable to register. This is the body’s way of coping. If the fullness hit home immediately, no one would survive!

Then comes the roller coaster ride of a concoction of disbelief, anger, guilt and a whole range of sentiments, which has your world spiraling like a runaway jet.

This is the time you need you need to give yourself some small breathing space to attend to your wounds and wait for a small ray of the healing process to commence, through an unhindered expression of your grief. For even though you don’t believe it now, over time you will heal. The fact is life will continue and you will have no choice but to keep on going for where there is life there is hope. Yes, you may have lost an entire way of life, a loved one, or good friends, but you are still living. Your heart is still pumping and your body demands you take care of it.

Time and again disasters have proven to be periods of opportunity. Opportunity that shows up the community spirit, as has been seen by the response to the catastrophic bush fires that have desolated the southern part of Australia. Opportunities for the humblest individual in society to become a champion. Opportunities for people to extend a helping hand to others they have never even met. Opportunities to reveal a true expression of empathy towards the sufferers. Opportunities to let others reach out to you. Being of use to others is often the best and most healing road you can choose, even if it is only in the way of giving a comforting shoulder for someone to cry on.

It is often in times of disasters, you come face to face with your fears, in living three-d. Fears that plague you in the still small hours of the morning, when life is at its lowest point. Nightmares that are finally brought out into the open. However, you will usually find the reality easier to cope with that the haunting fears of \”What if..?\’\’

Disasters bring you to the realization that life is unpredictable and you are forced to deal with situations you did not anticipate. Disasters that turn you into refugees. People who must fashion a different way of life. People who know what it is to lose everything. No matter what you feel like, you simply can’t lie down and die when disaster disintegrates your life.

It is not an option to sit and indulge in a self-pity party. Feeling sorry for yourself hurts only you. Disasters are the time when you need to reach deep inside yourself, to reveal strengths you never imagined you had.

The key to surviving is that you have to become a realist and an optimist at the same time, as life-destroying circumstances change you forever. You will come out the other side a different person.

Disaster divides your life into before and after the tragedy. You will never look at even the simple things of life in the same way. Yet, the end of one thing is always the beginning of another, for it has been proven that human nature will rise, just as out of the ashes the phantom phoenix rises anew.

How then are you to live through the grief of disaster? You look back and learn the lessons from the past, but more importantly you look forward and take one small step. The tallest mountains in the world were conquered one tiny step at a time. You can do it too. You can take the next step, no matter how painful. Let the future and the big things take care of themselves. Just make the decision to survive through today.
